ASL Literacy is defined as a measure of:
The ability
to understand and express American Sign Language.
Acquisition
of knowledge in areas including Deaf history, ASL literature, Deaf
traditions, Deaf politics and current issues. |
Knowledge
and experience associated with Deaf culture. |
The
ability to analyze the structures and to interpret the values and morals
(etc.) that are found in ASL texts.
Feeling
empowered in connection with the world, taking control of one's own
life, and contributing to the Deaf community as well as to a changing
society.
How ASL
benefits children and their family:
Early
exposure of ASL and literacy to develop good communication and bonding
between child and family. It also prepares the Deaf child to enter school
years. |
Visual
communication provides excellent access and understanding of what’s
happening in the child's world. |
Reduces
frustration in communicating with the Deaf child. |
Doesn’t
interfere with learning second language (English, for example) |
