ASL-PAH.com/Happy Waving Little Hands provides ASL & early literacy services to families and individuals.

ASL Literacy is defined as a measure of:

bullet

The ability to understand and express American Sign Language.

bullet

Acquisition of knowledge in areas including Deaf history, ASL literature, Deaf traditions, Deaf politics and current issues.

bullet

Knowledge and experience associated with Deaf culture.

bullet

The ability to analyze the structures and to interpret the values and morals (etc.) that are found in ASL texts.

bullet

Feeling empowered in connection with the world, taking control of one's own life, and contributing to the Deaf community as well as to a changing society.

 

How ASL benefits children and their family:

Early exposure of ASL and literacy to develop good communication and bonding between child and family. It also prepares the Deaf child to enter school years.

bullet

Visual communication provides excellent access and understanding of what’s happening in the child's world.

bullet

Reduces frustration in communicating with the Deaf child.

bullet

Doesn’t interfere with learning second language (English, for example)
